What’s not to love about air purifiers. They help keep your air fresher, crisper and free of contaminants and foul odors — which is better for you and anyone else in your household.

The real “home run” air purifiers, in my opinion, are the Energy Star-approved ones, or those certified as energy-efficient by the Energy Protection Agency. Models with this mark are not only better for the environment, releasing fewer pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions, but also are easier on your wallet. This isn’t just conjecture. According to Energy Star, since verified air purifiers consume less energy, they’ll also save you money over time on your energy bill.

Promising review: "I bought this and one other air filter from a different brand to try, I've never used these before and I thought the other ones replacement filters might be less costly than this version. So easier on the wallet than two of these.

I've had this for a month and a half. I got it due to some allergy issues. I had an eczema flare which can happen with allergies. Since then the flare ups went away. I noticed my dogs allergies have been alleviated as well. He had a runny nose, and since I got the two filters he's been good.

This one is extremely quiet compared to my other filter. I don't mind white noise, I actually kind of prefer it especially for sleep. So if you hate noise this one is a great pick. At max it's barely audible with a light air flow sound. I like that it has energy star approved. It picks up fur and dander, and I can even tell it's doing it's job due to the weekly cleans of the filter. Where as the other I have is harder to tell.

There is a warranty, another reason I took a chance on it. There also is no light like some other air filters, which is better for sleep. It's been going non stop now , and is still running smooth." — Brayden Ellis

Promising review: "Love this air purifier! I was waking up congested lately and after just one night of using this, I feel so much relief in the morning. It improved the air quality and overall I felt like it was a good value for the money. Plus it’s not super noisy and the second setting provides good white noise for sleeping. I like how it’s easy to use and the buttons are self explanatory and it has 3 levels of adjustability." — Emilie P

Or a "smart" BlueAir version

This powerhouse model combines the best of BlueAir's dual-filtration HEPASilent design with new technology that cleans more air faster, with as little energy as possible. Energy Star has rated it one of its most efficient purifiers, using just over 106 kWh per year.

Like BlueAir's other offerings, this version is intuitive to use, requiring only tapping on its lid to change between fan settings. It also displays view-at-a-glance air quality readings, switching between five colors to let you know the state of the air in your space.

If you wish to use BlueAir's app, it offers realtime air quality monitoring, plus the ability to schedule purifying, view cleaning progress, utilize Alexa voice control and more.

It's also astoundingly quiet, producing only 19 dB of sound on its lowest setting. This comes in versions for small, medium and large rooms.

Promising review: "Have owned this for 14 months and have been completely happy with this purifier. It is unbelievably good at monitoring air quality, and the slightest pollutant (smoke, dust, etc.) will cause it to immediately activate by increasing fan speed and showing a corresponding red-to-yellow-to-blue light indicator that reflects its response to air pollutants in realtime (high quality electronic air monitor). The double-filtration system is very effective and traps even small particles efficiently. Having had a couple of different air cleaners this is hands-down the best, and definitely worth more than its slightly higher but fair price. Highly recommend." — W. Buck

An impressive Honeywell option

Energy Star-approved and deemed one of the most efficient purifiers of 2024, this Honeywell version imparts zero ozone emissions and uses only just over 80 kWh per year (per Energy Star's report).

It harnesses four tiers of cleaning power to remove microscopic particles in your air, like dust mite debris, smoke, pollen, dust and dander. Another plus? You'll never have to purchase a replacement filter — its internal filter is designed to be removed, washed and popped back in once it's "full."

This is designed to purify medium sized rooms up to 300 square feet.

Promising review: "It's crazy to think, but it's absolutely true that this air purifier has been life changing not only for myself but also my son.

My entire life, I've been breathing through one nostril. My son too is always congested. Our home is spotlessly clean. Within a week of purchasing this purifier, (and I do run it with the charcoal filter) both my son and I have been able to breathe freely through both nostrils. That's not just a matter of convenience, my running and stamina have improved and as proof my VO2 level (volumetric oxygen my lungs can absorb) from my fitness tracker has increased by 10 percent.

It all sounds too good to be true, but if you've been on the border trying to decide, just do it.

I would not buy another machine because this has a washable filter, and the regular fan speed consumes 4 watts, dleep 2 watts, so it really costs nothing to run versus other machines that you have to buy expensive filters and consume 10 to 15 times more electricity multiplied by 24/7/365.

If there's something I'd change on this machine as a manufacturer, I would have a memory setting for the last fan speed before powering off and get rid of the useless brightness function and just supply dim lights.

Relax. Breathe in. Breathe out. Enjoy your new life." — Chris Yates

A compact Clorox model reviewers call an "unbelievable little device"

Clorox's tabletop purifier is also recognized by Energy Star as one of the most efficient purifiers around; it releases zero ozone emissions and uses just over 57 kWh per annum.

It combines HEPA filtration and an external pre-filter to rid your environment of allergens, pet hair, dust, mold and mildew and more.

It's designed to clean rooms up to 200 square feet.

Promising review: "Prior to this I had trouble breathing at night and was constantly congested. It’s safe to say that allergies and shedding cats don’t mix well with me. I’ve had this air purifier for 2 days now and it’s noticed such a difference. It’s dramatically changed the air quality in my room. I was also having issues with air circulation in my room and this has helped with that!! I definitely recommend this to anyone that has pets and is suffering during this allergy season- or any season really. I leave it on the 8hr timer throughout the night and turn it on midday for 2hrs, this has helped. It’s so great to finally be able to breathe again!!" — Vanessa
