Thibaut Pinot wins the 7th stage of the Tour de Suisse

Thibaut Pinot won solo ahead of Alexey Lutsenko in Malbun in the 7th and penultimate stage of the Tour de Suisse. Sergio Higuita took the leader’s jersey from Jakob Fuglsang. The Groupama-FDJ rider made the difference in the last climb, a non-category pass (12.4 km at 8.4% average). A group of fourteen breakaways, including Thibaut Pinot, had formed at the start of the stage and had counted up to almost 8 minutes ahead of the peloton.

On the climb to Malbun, the group gradually split, leaving two men alone in front, the Kazakh Alexey Lutsenko (Astana) and the Spaniard Ion Izaguirre (Cofidis), pursued by Thibaut Pinot. The Frenchman finally joined and then let go of the two men to take off for the stage victory. He is ahead of Spaniard Oscar Rodriguez (Movistar) and Kazakh Alexey Lutsenko (Astana).

“You had to believe it,” said the winner. It was so hot that I especially didn’t want to put myself in the red and in the end all those who really stepped up paid for it in the end so I think my tactic was good”.

This is the second victory for Thibaut Pinot this season after that during the 5th stage of the Tour des Alpes at the end of April. “. I’ve always said, I ride my bike to win. I am no longer in the same period as before my fall. I just want to win races and the rest doesn’t matter to me,” added the Frenchman.

Colombian Sergio Higuita (Bora), 4th in the stage, stole the leader’s yellow jersey from Dane Jakob Fuglsang (Israel-Premier Tech), 7th on arrival in Malbun. Higuita is two seconds ahead of Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers) who will be the favorite in the 25.6 km time trial in Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein at the end of the 85th Tour of Switzerland.
