the one who wants to compete with Tesla

Volkswagen has released the ID.AERO, its first all-electric luxury sedan, a car designed to take on the Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4.

After the ID.4 and ID.5 SUVs, the ID.3 compact and the ID MPV. Buzz, the Aero is a four-door “fastback” sedan that will be built in China for the Chinese market from 2023. But that same year Volkswagen will announce a European and German-built version at its Emden plant. Described by Volkswagen as a “premium mid-size sedan for upper-class Chinese families”, the ID.AERO transfers already existing ID styling cues to a sedan with a long wheelbase that promises plenty of interior space. One immediately notices at the front of the rather thin Matrix LED headlights and the light bar which extends over the entire width of the grille. The rear also receives a light bar that takes up the entire width, giving the ID.AERO a look of an Audi Sportback.

The profile reveals a silhouette not seen on thermal Volkswagen cars and well-filled wheel arches with 22-inch rims. As for the interior, we will have to be imaginative because Volkswagen has not provided us with any images for the moment. However, we think we will find something quite luxurious with plenty of space for passengers. In any case, this is what this large wheelbase suggests.

Technical side

The Aero’s body lives up to the name: engineered and designed to boast a 0.23 drag coefficient. This new model is based on the same MEB electrical architecture as the other models in the ID range. and therefore has a 77 kWh battery. Although Volkswagen doesn’t reveal much about the engines available, we can imagine that the same GMPs will be found under the hood of the other ID cars.

The German brand has not yet communicated on the powers and performance, but Volkswagen is already announcing a WLTP autonomy of up to 620 km, which would make the ID.AERO the most efficient model of the range. Case to follow.
