The Apple Car charger looks like the MagSafe

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has just obtained a patent indicating that it could use a MagSafe type charger for its still non-existent, but much talked about electric car.

What happened

A revised patent dated Tuesday titled “charging station with passive alignment mechanism” describes an EV charging system that can move in the longitudinal direction, which would allow the driver to park their vehicle and start charging immediately, as soon as the plug is plugged in.

The jack can move both horizontally and vertically, eliminating the need to perfectly park a vehicle and allowing vehicles of varying heights to be loaded.

The latest patent indicates the presence of a safety device – a plate above the socket – which could protect it from violent shocks, while simplifying the connection with the vehicle.

Why this matters

Although a patent indicates business interest, there is no guarantee that it will result in an actual product or service in the future.

In fact, the company headed by Tim Cookhas filed patents related to solar electric vehicle charging in the past.

Recently, Apple hired Desi Ujkashevicveteran of Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:F) and vehicle safety and engineering specialist who is experienced in dealing with regulatory issues.

This came after the highly publicized abandonment of “Project Titan” by many employees.

Price movement

On Tuesday, Apple’s stock price fell 1.6% to $154.51, according to data from Benzinga Pro.
