Tesla has faced a number of brake failure allegations over the past two years in China, although no evidence has been forthcoming. One of the best-known cases is that of a car owner in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province.
However, more than a year after the accident, the owner apologized and admitted that he had fabricated false information.
A Weibo user who identified himself as the owner of Wenzhou in his profile today released a statement in which he admits to making up his own statements to discredit Tesla and apologizes to the electric vehicle (EV) maker.
As a reminder, the accident happened on August 12, 2020, when the Model 3 driven by the owner, Mr. Chen, allegedly lost control and crashed into a dozen cars before coming to a stop.
Translation of the owner’s declaration
“After the accident, I was upset even though I knew that I had pressed the accelerator pedal instead of the brake,” read the statement released on Monday.
“I have insulted and defamed Tesla Inc. and Tesla cars since mid-August 2020, continuing to fabricate content on Douyin, Weibo, radio and TV interviews about self-acceleration and vehicle failure. Tesla brakes, and how to value life and stay away from Tesla. »
In 2020, immediately after the accident, the owner admitted that he himself pressed the accelerator pedal and did not apply the brakes, but then began to claim otherwise. In October 2020, the results of the examination of the car showed that before the collision, the brake pedal of the car was in a condition where it was not depressed. On October 27, 2020, traffic police determined that the car owner should bear full responsibility for the accident. In May 2021, an investigation report released by the Wenzhou Automotive Engineering Company found that the data confirmed that the owner mistakenly pressed the accelerator pedal instead of the brake pedal. In October 2021, a local court in Wenzhou issued a verdict stating that the owner was found guilty of damaging Tesla’s reputation and should apologize to Tesla in Douyin and pay damages of 50 000 RMB ($7,750).
“The case went into effect in March this year after the first and second trial. The verdict concluded that I have damaged Tesla’s reputation and that I must apologize to Tesla and pay financial damages,” the statement read.
