The latest update for Tesla vehicles, version 2022.20, brings something quite unexpected: the sound notification when the traffic light turns green is available for everyone.
For once, the developers of the software that equips Tesla vehicles have added a remote functionality that will appeal to the vast majority of owners. That said, it could cringe those who paid for the Fully Autonomous Driving Capability option at 7,500 euros, because the functionality was reserved for them until now. This is a small audible signal to notify the driver that the traffic light has just turned green.
A practical feature, but previously paid
For people who tend to get distracted when stopped at a traffic light, it’s very handy to hear a discreet beep to let them know they can move on. In the software integrated into Teslas, this had been possible for a few years, provided that you had paid for the fully autonomous driving capability (FSD for Full Self-Driving in English), which is billed at 7,500 euros.
Certainly, in this option, other features are present, but a small community of Tesla owners particularly appreciated this sound signal assuring them that they could get back on the road, and then considered it an integral part of the option that they had paid in gold.
All owners of vehicles from the firm of Elon Musk will be able to taste this practical functionality from today, since the 2022.20 update begins to be deployed worldwide.
Tesla is responding to a request from a significant number of owners who had not paid for the fully autonomous driving capability, but this opens the door to other much-requested additions, which could thus make future buyers think about buying an option offered with the order.
Indeed, if we consider that the American manufacturer is going to add, as standard, more and more features hitherto reserved for those who paid for an option, we can wonder if there is an interest in paying the order rather than patiently waiting for it to be offered for free.
One of the driving aids most requested by Tesla drivers who only have the basic Autopilot built into the vehicle is, for example, automatic lane change. Today, it is necessary to have at least the “Enhanced Autopilot” option, at 3,800 euros, so that the vehicle changes lanes automatically when the indicator is activated. But if in the near future, this is integrated into the basic offer, as is the case with some other manufacturers, the interest of the paid option will be much less. If the addition of the green light notification is any indication of what’s to come in the future, it’s not unimaginable that more additions are coming soon.
However, we imagine that the 100% autonomous driving planned by Tesla will always remain an option, since Elon Musk considers it a financial investment.
