Tesla has its Superchargers, Nio has its battery swapping stations. The first entered service exactly 4 years ago and the success is undeniable.
Nio has bet a good part of its economic model on its battery exchange system and the rental of the latter. After the failure of Better Place, the bet left more than one dubious. Today, Nio can celebrate with satisfaction the fourth anniversary of its first battery exchange station.
To date, almost 1,000 stations (997 exactly) are operational, including 1 in Norway. In one year, more than 600 stations have been installed, including nearly 250 since the start of 2022. A network that supports the brand’s sales growth. Its network covers 5 vertical and 3 horizontal motorway links in the country with 262 stations. The last highway covered is the G15 from Shenyang to Haikou where Nio has installed 36 stations over the 3,710 km route… In total, 252 stations are located along the highways.
China: 5 million electric cars sold in 2022?
More stations, more vehicles, and logically more exchanges made. As the graph shows, undoubtedly impacted by the periods of confinement which limited travel in 2020 and early 2021, growth has been spectacular over the last 12 months. In June 2021, the counter was at around 3 million exchanges. A year later, we are close to 10 million with 9.7 million battery exchanges.
Let’s not forget either that Nio has its equivalent to the Supercharger in parallel. The network has 875 stations and 4,793 fast charging stations, plus 4,391 “at destination” charging points. To support its deployment in Europe, it plans to deploy both exchange stations and fast charging stations. We bet that the network will also be deployed along the main highways.
