If you use one of the best iPhones or best iPads and are also a fan of Google’s Chrome web browser, we have good news for you.
This is because Google announced (opens in a new tab) a fairly sweet upgrade to Chrome for iOS and iPadOS, giving users an even better reason to download an alternative to Apple’s Safari.
The update, available to download now (opens in a new tab)makes one of the best browsers even better by adding much-needed features.
Traditionally, Apple has made it pretty hard to use anything other than the default Safari, but that’s not stopping Google from trying.
Starting with iOS 14, Apple introduced a way to select the default browser (opens in a new tab) it was a big boost for Chrome, Firefox, Brave, and other third-party alternatives.
Let’s take a look at the five new features.
Chief among the bunch is privacy, a topic Google is increasingly focusing on as the European Union and other regulators challenge its relatively data-intensive practices.
Already a feature on Chrome otherwise, Improved Safe Browsing (opens in a new tab) does what it says on the box: protection against malware, phishing and other web threats while you browse.
Chrome will predict and warn users about potentially dangerous websites and scan for compromised usernames and passwords. It’s a pretty neat and useful feature.
Autofill passwords
If you’re locked into the Chrome ecosystem (meaning you’re using it on a computer), this is a great feature: the ability for autofill passwords (opens in a new tab).
It takes a bit more work, but head to Settings > Passwords > Autofill Passwords and select Chrome as the default option.
find new things
If you’ve spent time away from Chrome, the update makes it quick and easy to highlight new content just by starting a new search, expanding the ability to sync bookmarks and tabs between different versions of Chrome.
Get this: Google first released the feature on iOS and says it will come to Android in the future.
Translate websites
Using machine learning intelligence, Google will automatically start translating websites into your preferred languages, opening up huge swaths of the web for easy reading.
Google claims to have worked on detecting websites that need to be translated automatically, which resulted in a higher rate of successful translations.
Chrome Stocks
Finally, Google teased the release of Chrome Actions on iOS, allowing you to quickly trigger an action from Chrome’s address bar.
Actions include things like clearing browser data, opening an incognito tab, and setting Chrome as the default browser.
After a while, the Chrome address bar will even start predicting relevant actions that might help you.
Google says the actions will roll out in the coming weeks.
