How the new Google News works

Google News is getting a makeover on the desktop (i.e. the version that can be read on the computer) and is starting to offer new features. The update was launched globally in countries where Google News is present, a good 125 of them in 40 different languages. Obviously, Italy is also present, and in fact anyone who enters the Google News page now finds the notice announcing the update.

What’s new in the desktop version of Google News is the result of listening and collaborating with readers. These suggestions have been translated into two new features: at the top of the home page, next to the main news, local news and personalized choices have been placed. Local news becomes one of the main offers of the Google Newsstand, which thus emphasizes the creation of a close link between the local digital press and the readers. A step which was indeed missing and which does justice to the many journalists working in the small editorial offices of provincial newspapers, but who are always on the front line when it comes to informing their readers in an adequate manner.

Google News: more filters for local news

As expected, starting from the desktop version of Google News, it will be possible to configure new filters (city name or postcode) that will allow reading news from local newspapers from several different places.

This results in a greater supply of information. Think of those sprawling provinces that have many municipalities and for which it becomes necessary to consult several local newspapers for the facts of the region. Or, quite simply, to those who want to stay informed of what is happening in their old town. Or, alternatively, those who live in one place and work in another and need to read local news from both places.

Google News: the personalization of information

The news personalization feature has been highlighted with a blue button that is located in the Your Topics section, top right. In this new section it will be possible to choose the categories that interest you, including news (Italy and world), sports, entertainment, etc.

In the desktop version, there is now also a kind of “stamp” indicating an original statement and certifying that a fact check has been carried out on the article by independent fact checkers.
