historic creation of a union in an Apple Store

Of the 110 employees at the Apple store in Towson, Maryland, 65 voted in favor of forming a union, while 33 opposed it. Result: this store is the first of the US Apple Store network to unionize. This is a first for the computer group, which opposes the unionization movement taking place in its American stores (it has 270 outlets).

Deirdre O’Brien, the group’s vice-president in charge of human resources, and also head of the Apple Store network, had nevertheless visited this store in person in May. She explained to the employees that if they had the right to unionize, they had the right… not to do so. Among the arguments used by Apple to discourage the attempts of its employees, the company evokes the fact that an intermediary can degrade the direct relationship between management and employees.
