The market for new passenger cars in Switzerland and Liechtenstein ended the year with an increase of 0.7% compared to 2020. This is the information that emerges from the report presented, Mondayby the Association of Automobile Importers, Auto-Suisse. “Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and its effects, the statement explains, the number of 238481 new registrations (236827 in 2020) is however significantly lower than the pre-pandemic level of 311466 cars”, reached in 2019.

“Rich in challenges»continues Auto-Suisse, the 2021 automotive year was “marked by delivery difficulties”, due to the shortage of electronic components in the production of vehicles, and “by restrictions international transport”.

Still, there are some positives. The main thing is that “the demand for new passenger cars has again increased significantly” compared to the first year of the pandemic. And there is change at the top of the list. Tesla’s Model 3 takes first place, with 5,074 vehiclesmuch to the delight of brand founder Elon Musk.

The Watson site specifies that the American car manufacturer has passed the “historic leader”, theOktavia from Skoda (4974 vehicles). The Model 3 becomes the first vehicle electric to have this “honor”.

Uncertain outlook

For 2022, Auto-Suisse intends to overcome the delivery difficulties experienced last year. “The long delivery times for vehicles ordered”, with their share of uncertainties, “affect the entire sector”, notes spokesperson Christoph Wolnik. “We are not used to the demand for new vehicles being significantly higher than the supply. But we are staying and believe the situation will improve no later than the second half of 2022.”

Tesla's Model 3 is ahead of Skoda's Oktavia by a hundred units.
