How the pricing table works

The MacBook Air is one of those iconic devices that helped evolve the laptop market. When in 2008, Steve Jobs arrived on stage and extracted his latest creation from a kraft paper envelope, the entire IT industry was taken aback. It will take several years for the competition to get in working order, especially with the name “Ultrabook”, supported by Intel, which establishes rigorous specifications.

Fourteen years later, it’s not unreasonable to say that most laptops in use today pick up some of the DNA of the first MacBook Air. But if Apple is known for its breakthrough innovations, we know that it can also make do with simple marginal adjustments.

For a potential buyer, this ambivalence means asking a particular question: should we turn to the current model or wait for the next generation, which could shake up the market? Here are some things to help you make that decision.

MacBook Air M1: an ultraportable still in the game?

Long unchanged, the design of the MacBook Air has finally evolved in 2020. So don’t expect an overall redesign for a while… especially since there’s nothing to complain about in terms of its performance. ‘ergonomics. It is a coherent machine, which would have simply deserved to have more discreet borders around the screen. In this regard, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo explains that the MacBook Air 2022 will probably have a slightly larger panel (13.6 inches against 13.3 inches), which means that Apple could nibble a few millimeters here and there while keeping the same chassis.

On the display side, the MacBook Air 2020 is classic with LED backlighting, while we find, for example, Mini-LED on the new MacBook Pro. This technology offers better contrast and much higher brightness, and is a real strong point that we would like to see arrive on this new generation. However, the latest rumors emanating from the blogosphere seem to indicate that this will not be the case.

Some specialists also evoke the arrival of an M2 chip on the next MacBook Air. The performance would be superior to that of the M1, but we should not expect a leap forward, especially with regard to the graphics part.

The spread of telecommuting and videoconferencing in the wake of the pandemic makes it necessary to have better cameras on laptops. Apple has moved forward with integrating a Full HD webcam on its new iMacs and MacBook Pros, so it seems only logical that the MacBook Air would also get an improved camera.

MacBook Air (2022): evolution or revolution?

Based on current disclosures, the new MacBook Air should be a simple evolution, and will not usher in a new generation of devices. So what to expect? We can already count on:

  • A 13.6-inch screen with thinner bezels;
  • A (slightly) more powerful M2 processor;
  • A simple LED screen;
  • A better webcam.
