3 good reasons to follow a Cretan diet

Do you want to change your diet to be healthier, without necessarily trying to lose weight? The Cretan Diet is made for you. This, which promotes the consumption of plants, quality fats and whole grains, has its origins in the traditional eating habits of the populations of countries around the Mediterranean Sea, such as Greece, Italy and Croatia.

According to a study carried out in the 1950s by the scientist Ancel Keys, the life expectancy of the inhabitants of Crete and Corfu is superior to other populations, despite a rudimentary health system, says Passeport Santé. The reason ? Their diet, in which red meat, sugar and industrial products have a very limited place.

The main objective of the Cretan diet is to preserve arterial health. Indeed, the cholesterol level and atherosclerosis decrease thanks to the monounsaturated fatty acids provided in particular by olive oil and the limited quantity of saturated fatty acids, such as red meat. It thus helps prevent cardiovascular diseases and reduces the risk of developing cancer.

The Mediterranean diet, a true way of life

If it requires changing certain eating habits, the Cretan diet is not particularly restrictive. Whole grain products, fruits and vegetables, garlic, onions or even spices can be consumed in abundance. With a caloric intake of 1,800 to 2,500 calories per day depending on physical activity, he recommends a daily consumption of nuts, sheep’s cheese or even red wine, but in moderation for the latter.

The effects of this diet are observed in the long term, continues Passeport Santé. Thus, it can be practiced daily and become a real way of lifewhich will allow you to make better choices for your diet and thus see the benefits on your health, including weight loss according to previous eating habits, even if this is not the main objective.
